Bio
Will Omar Valdes (W.O.V) (They/Them) (b. 1998) creates figurative works on handmade paper and laminate paper objects. Using these they create modular installations that shift and change meaning depending on the installation site and curation. They experiment with specific papermaking “recipes” such as the combination of used semen-stained rags, coffee, tobacco, and sugarcane fibers to embed their materials with a distinctly queerly Cuban conceptual origin that is built directly into the work. Born in Sancti Spíritus, Cuba, W.O.V and raised in Miami, Florida, they obtained their Bachelor of Fine Arts and a certification in Art History from the University of South Florida in 2020. They are expected to receive a Master of Fine Arts from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University in 2024.
Artist Statement
Will Omar Valdes (W.O.V)’s investigates the complexities of their identity as a Queer Latine Cuban-American Immigrant through their art. Drawing from their upbringing in Miami and the influence of internet culture, they create handmade paper paintings, installations, and sculptures that explore themes of labor, sexuality, and heritage. Using a mix of internet aesthetics and personal experiences, W.O.V tackles taboo subjects like online sex work, fatphobia, and queer intimacy, reimagining them within a Latine domestic space. Their work blurs the lines between the physical and digital worlds, creating a vibrant and inclusive space where identity and expression intersect.
